Seeds, roots and bark

Indication and directions for use

Coughs, take decoction of leaves as needed.

Gastric disorders (tympanism, dyspepsia, diarrhea) take decoction of leaves as needed.

Hemmorhoids- use finely pounded leaves as poultice or roll into an elongated mass and insert into the rectum as suppository at bedtime.

Skin diseases- roast seeds, pound, and apply over affected areas.

Skin ulcers- crush roots or leaves and apply juice over affected areas.

Active components: fixed oils , crystalline bitter principle.

Banato

Banato

 

The scientific name of banato is mallotus philippensis. Other variety is called Croton philippinense, echinus philippinensis.

Other name for banato are apuyo, buas, darandang, kamala, panagisen, panagisian, pangaplasin, pikal, rottlera, sala, tafu, tagusala and tutula.

 

Leaves and seeds are used as herbal medicine.  For dermal fungal infection pound leaves or seeds and apply on affected areas.

Active component of banato are rottlerin (reddish-yellow resin), 47-80%, fixed oil, 5-24% citric acid, mallotoxin, and kamalin.

Balatong

The scientific name of balatong are Glycine max, Glycine hispida maxim, Glycine soja,  Soja max piper, Soja hispida Moench.

In tagalong we call it utau and in English it is called soybean

 

Usually as a herbal medicine the bean and root is used.

For cuts and laceration the decoction of roots is used as wash.

Constituents:

Fixed oil, 14-22%; protein, 50% ; carbohydrate, 16.2% diastase; urease, lipase, allantoinase; peroxidise; pentosans; sojasterol; sitosterin; phasin.

Uses of Sweet basil

 

The scientific names of balanoy are Ocimum basilicum, Ocimum americanum blanco, Ocimum citriodorum blanco.

It is also is called albanaka by tagalongs, bidai by ilokanos;  bouak , kalu-ui, kamangi by bisayas; samiling, samirig by bicolanon; other call it bauing, ruku-ruku, valonoi, balanoy.

The English name for this plant is grand basilica and sweet basil.

Indication and direction of use:

For cough take the infusion or decoction of sweet basil or tops as tea.

For gas pain (tympanism) take decoction as tea.

Ringworm and insect bites, apply juice of crushed leaves on the area affected.

Tootache – wet small piece of cotton with juice of crushed leaves and insert into tooth cavity.

 

Constituents

Volatile oil, 1.5%  -ocimen, pinene, terpin hydrate, cincole, methyl chavicol, linalool , anethole, eugenol.
