FARMING IN BASKET
In arid lands or mountainous places, or lahar covered areas, it is possible to grow plants and
enable them to yield fruits if these will be planted in basket or “bayong”. This is done in places
where soil is not good. For instance in the Basque province, farmers get soil from another
places and bring it over to their place to grow plants.
MATERIALS:
Basket or bayong to contain the seedling
Fertilizer (organic or chemical)
Planting
Bamboo pole (3 ft) for irrigation
Hoe for digging
MANNER OF PLANTING
Mix up in bulk, use weight and measures
7 parts soil
2 parts fertilizer
1 part urea
SOIL AND FERTILIZER MAY BE MIXED IN ANY MEASURES
1. Dig a hole in the ground large enough to contain the basket in its full size.
2.Carefully remove the plastic bag of the seedling to be planted; avoid crumbling the soil
that envelops the roots.
3.Pour into the basket soil: 1 can (kerosene can) to serve as support and foundation for
the seedling.
4. Place the seedling in the center of the basket and
5. Pour in more of the mixture of soil and fertilizer until filled.
6.Prepare the bamboo pole: Puncture the nodes to let pass through, except the last node
and about 8 inches from the bottom, and
7. Sharpen the tip of the bamboo to be thrusted into the ground.
8.Make one-inch hole at the bottom side where bamboo straw will be inserted to serve as
outlet for the water going to the plant.
9. To make the plant always moist, put around the plant dried grass or straw.
10.Vegetables like petchay, tomatoes, eggplant and similar short term plants may also be
planted beside it.
